This is a standard British WW2 haversack or small pack. It was used to store things like extra socks, water bottle, mess tins and other personal items of a soldier. It has internal dividers to keep everything organized. Small pack was resting at the soldiers back connected to basic pouches via L-shaped braces called L-straps.
